Added Coverage with Lots of Flexibility
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are designed to help fill the gaps in Original Medicare. If you choose this type of plan, it will help pay your portion of the covered expenses that Original Medicare does not. And it will give you the added freedom to use any doctor, specialist, or hospital that accepts Medicare.
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans do not cover prescription drugs. However, any Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan can be paired with a standalone Part D prescription drug plan. It’s important to note that you cannot have a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan and a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time.
SPEAKER 1: We have what they call original Medicare Parts A and B, but it doesn't cover drugs. And since we have a couple of regular prescriptions and the ones we're prescribed if we get sick, we also have Medicare Part D. On top of that, I have a couple of chronic conditions that take some extra care, so I have Medicare supplement insurance to help cover what Medicare doesn't.
SPEAKER 2: Exactly. Some people do rely on just original Medicare, but our other additions help us cover bases for anything unexpected.
SPEAKER 1: The only downside is that we have to juggle more than one health plan.

Enrolling in a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan
You can enroll in an individual Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan at any time of the year. But your acceptance is guaranteed only during the six-month Open Enrollment Period that begins the first day of the month you are enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. So it’s a good idea to consider this type of coverage before you enroll in Medicare for the very first time.
Different Plans for Different Budgets and Health Care Needs
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are identified by the letters A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Each plan covers a different set of costs. Some plans only cover basic benefits. Others may cover a wide range of health care costs.
